Anthrax Histopathology

The organisms are found in the pulmonary lymphatics surrounding pulmonary arterioles and bronchi.

Low-power photomicrograph (H & E stain) shows a small pulmonary artery with hematoxylinophilic bacilli completely filling the perivascular lymphatic space. Clusters of pigmented macrophages border the bacteria.

High-power photomicrograph of the same specimen better demonstrates the bacilli (arrow).
