Pulmonary Lymphoid System

In order to understand the imaging features of anthrax, one must have an understanding of the anatomy of the pulmonary lymphatics.

The lymphatics begin in the centrilobular region at the level of the arteriole. They are not present in the alveolar wall. They also originate as a pleural plexus that continues via the interlobular septa to connect with blood vessels, both arteries and veins.

Lymphatics
- Originate in the pleura
- Valves
- Drain towards hilum
- Follow interlobular septa
- Accompany blood vessels
